Funding Part-time Education
Being a part-time student has advantages and disadvantages. Sometimes it seems like every program is geared towards full-time students. How can you pay for your education and make both your budget and time work?
As a part-time student, you have some advantage over full-time students. You can work more hours during the school year to earn more money. However, you might be a part-time student so that you can take care of your children, or because you volunteer someplace. These are the times when it can be harder to fund part-time education.
Full-time students get a discount on tuition: generally, each of their courses is less expensive than each of yours. This means that you will be spending more money to go to school. Full-time students also have the advantage that they get more funding from scholarships, bursaries, and other sources. It’s disappointing to see “full-time status” as a requirement on so many applications.
You can apply for loans designed specifically for part-time students. You want to find a loan that best matches your profile. If you are working, you might be able to begin paying the loan back right away. If you are not working, then you will want a loan that you don’t have to pay back for at least a few years, and ideally until you have done your school. This isn’t a problem if you will one be in school two or three years (taking a one-year diploma or certificate, for example). However, if you are doing an undergraduate degree that takes four years typically, on a part-time basis this will likely take you six to eight years.
One way to finish your degree faster and still be a part-time student is to take classes during the entire year. Many full-time students only take classes for two semesters a year, or eight months. If you take half the classes for the full year, you will have done 75% of the courses a full-time student takes. This means that you will be done school sooner, and increases your chances of getting a loan that you don’t have to repay until you graduate.
The key to being a part-time student is time management. If you have kids at home, you will need to block out certain hours a week to work on school. If you are working full-time and taking courses on the side, it might seem like the reading is the least important thing for you to do. Keeping on top of your schoolwork now will make it easier when crunch time rolls around and you are doing exams, essays, and reports.
If you are going to school part-time to increase your skills for your job, you might be able to get your employer to pay for all or part of your education. Even if your education is not directly related to your job, you might be able to get special scholarships because of your association with your workplace. Ask your employer and ask your school about what is available.
Your school’s office of student awards and financial aid will be able to help you discover certain awards that are only awarded to part-time students. The Organization of Part-time University Students (or OPUS) can help you find work, find scholarships, and discover new ways to pay for your education. If your school is not affiliated with OPUS, you can check them out on the web, and go to your school’s equivalent department.
Time management skills will also increase your ability to earn money. This will help you pay for your education faster. And the skills that you develop in time management (organization, work ethic, planning) will also help you in your money management.
Manage your money wisely. It can be difficult when you are a part-time student and all of your friends are not in school. They might be out at the bars or shopping all the time, but you have to be realistic about what you can afford. Choose cheaper options, like having your friends over instead of going out, to help make your lifestyle fit your means.
Going to school part-time can be a lot of hard work, but the end result is ultimately rewarding. Explore your options with your school, with your bank, and with your employer to work out the best deal for you.
Freelancing With An It Degree
Hate working for the man? Can’t stand completing meaningless chores for people that don’t value you as much as they should? Is it time for you to start thinking about freelancing? It may in fact be time to start out with your own company, and all you need to do it as an IT degree to help give your business the start it deserves. With an IT degree one can start a reputable freelance business that allows them to sleep, eat, and do whatever they want, whenever they want to do it.
Obtaining an IT degree is like a ticket to freedom from corporate America. The secret behind this element is the fact that people who have an IT degree are in demand to do web programming, networking, and countless other technologically advanced tasks for small businesses. While the small businesses can’t afford an expensive IT firm to handle their requests, they can, and usually will employ someone that freelances with an IT degree. What you will get as a freelancer is more freedom, and responsibility than ever before.
Freelancing with an IT degree is not an easy job, but it can be extremely rewarding. Having an IT degree allows the freelancer to promote some accreditations, and certifications that they would have earned while obtaining the IT degree. This means that while most freelancers are not certified in windows, networking, or UNIX, you can be. This is a huge reason why obtaining an IT degree makes sense for those serious about working for themselves.
When you earn an IT degree you will become someone that others can trust with their computer, and IT needs. Going through the IT program will help show the way that computers can work, and the latest application for how they do work to help others. This information can then be used once you earn your IT degree to help clients create the most technologically sound network possible.
Even small businesses are hiring those with an IT degree to do networking and other tasks. They prefer to hire freelancers with lower overhead and can offer a reasonable rate. Typically the lower the cost for the service, the better chance one can win such a contract. Therefore with an IT degree, and some free time, you can bid on any freelance IT job that meets your skill set.
What is there not to like about having an IT degree? There are so many job options that you will have as a freelancer with this degree. Think about networking an entire office building utilizing the experience you have gained with your IT degree. Imagine the possibilities that could come with a job like that. The pay alone would be more than some people make in a year, and this could take you just weeks to do.
Another advantage of freelancing once you have earned your IT degree is the tax write offs and incentives. As with any small business owner you will have the right and privilege to write off business expenses from your taxes. This alone can save you thousands of dollars, and make it worth the while to form your own business. Literally everything from the house you sleep in, to the car you drive is considered at least somewhat tax deductible. That is what makes having an IT degree such a special degree. It allows one to create a small business, and enjoy all the tax benefits, without all the startup costs that most small businesses incur.
Having an IT degree is literally a one-way ticket to a new way of life, and it’s one trip you’ll be glad you took.
How Student Loans Work
Students have many options for financing the cost of college. Loans are just some of those options. However, all avenues for securing scholarships and grants should be pursued before trying to find a loan. This is because scholarships and grants do not have to be paid back, while loans do. There are many different types of loans available for consideration, and many factors of which you should be aware.
First of all, it’s best to get your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in early. In fact, it should be turned in as soon as you or your parents have mailed in your annual income tax forms. While the federal government uses this information in order to assess your need for aid, state governments also offer grants based on your form. Most of the time these state grants are first come first served, so the earlier you apply the better chance you have of receiving this type of financial aid. Also, this is the method in which you apply for government loans as well.
If you find you did not receive enough aid to cover your expenses, move on to applying for a loan. There are several types of government loans to consider. The first is a Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students (PLUS) which puts the responsibility of repayment on parents, at an interest rate that’s currently 8.5 percent. There is no limit on the funds, and repayment must begin 60 days after disbursement with no grace period. There is a credit check involved. If the parents are denied the loan, the student will have an increased limit when they apply for Stafford loans.
Stafford loans are either disbursed by banks or directly by the federal government. There are subsidized loans, meaning the government pays the interest while you are in school. They are based on need. There are also unsubsidized loans in which you are responsible for the interest which accrues. They are not need based. However, you can elect to defer the interest payments until after graduation. Students are not required to repay these loans until six months after they graduate. Loan caps differ depending upon how far along you are in your schooling. Freshmen can borrow up to $3,500, sophomores up to $4,500, and juniors and seniors $5,000. The limits increase if you are an independent student, your parents were denied a PLUS loan, or if you are a graduate student. These loans currently have a fixed interest rate of 6.8 percent, but some lenders may offer rate reductions based upon your career path, such as for teachers or nurses.
A school based loan, offered with funds provided by the government, is called the Perkins Loan. It is need based, subsidized, and currently has a fixed interest rate of 5 percent. Undergraduates are eligible to receive up to $4,000 per year, while graduate students can receive up to $6,000. Your school’s financial aid office determines if you are eligible to receive this type of loan.
A first time borrower can expect his or her loan funds to be delayed by about a month after those of someone who has borrowed before. This means you should apply for your loan as soon as possible. You will also be required to take an entrance interview in order to receive your payments. You will probably be able to take this interview online. Your financial aid office will assist you in completing the interview.
If you know you are going to need loan money to cover college expenses, check with your school’s financial aid office. Some schools do not accept Stafford loans, so you would need to make other arrangements for a loan or find a school that will accept one. Private loans from banks are an option, but be aware that most of the time you will be required to repay them without a grace period. There are some, such as one offered through U-promise, that can be deferred until after graduation. Also, since they are based upon credit scores, many students may not qualify due to a lack of credit history.
Don’t wait until the last minute. Get your FAFSA filled out, and explore all of your options regarding paying for college. This will ensure a smooth transition and better prepare you for any setbacks that may come along.
An introduction to GMAT
What is GMAT?
The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is an annually conducted examination. It is an analysis of the general skills and abilities that one has aggregated over time.
The GMAT test is a consistent form of evaluation that aids business schools or ‘B-Schools’ in estimating the skills and qualifications of the candidate; which are essential for advanced study in business and management. It helps to calibrate the basic verbal, mathematical and analytical writing skills of the applicant.
Examination format
The examination is composed of three main sections. There is an essay section called as Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA). There are also two multiple-choice sections, namely, Quantitative and Verbal.
• Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA) Section
The GMAT test commences with the Analytical Writing Assessment Section. The AWA division offers and tests two unique writing skills,
1. Analysis of an issue
2. Analysis of an argument
There are 30 minutes allotted for each type of analysis. The applicants are provided with a computer on which they can type and save their essays using a common and manageable word-processing program. After the completion of the AWA section, the Verbal and Quantitative sections follow. However, these multiple-choice questions can appear in random order.
• Quantitative Section
On the completion of the AWA section there is an optional ten-minute break; after which the Quantitative section starts. This division of the GMAT examination consists of 37 multiple-choice questions. The questions are broadly divided into two categories,
1. Data Sufficiency
2. Problem Solving
There are approximately 24 questions on Problem Solving and 13 questions on Data Sufficiency. The candidate is allotted 75 minutes to complete the entire section.
• Verbal Section
After the completion of the Quantitative Section, there is another optional ten-minute break; and it is time for the final Verbal Section of the GMAT test. This section consists of 41 multiple-choice questions. These questions are categorized into three types,
1. Reading Comprehension
2. Critical Reasoning
3. Sentence Correction
There are approximately 41 questions on Reading Comprehension, 14 questions on Critical Reading and 13 questions on Sentence Correction. There are maximum 75 minutes available to complete the entire Verbal Section.
B Schools and GMAT scores
Since 1954, applicants have undertaken the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) to exhibit their skills and potential to Business Schools or ‘B-Schools’ admission committees. The GMAT examination chiefly tests the following skills,
• Endurance and concentration power
• Command over English grammar, mathematics skills, logic and reasoning
• Guesswork and decision making
• Ability to solve problems
An applicant of the GMAT test receives four scores as the result of the examination; every score denoting the result of the corresponding type of section of GMAT. The significance of the different scores is mentioned below,
• Quantitative scaled sub score
This score ranges from 0 to 60. Effectively the maximum score is 51.
• Verbal scaled sub score
This score ranges from 0 to 60. Effectively the maximum score is 48.
• Overall scaled score
This score ranges from 200 to 800. It is the amalgamation of Math and Verbal scores. Hence, it is an overall score. B-schools stress importance chiefly for the overall score.
• Analytical Writing Assessment score
This score ranges from 0 to 6. It has a lower priority compared to the 200 to 800 cumulative score.
The GMAT examination is graded curve that is set beforehand. As a result, the scaled score will correspond to a certain percentile. For example, an overall score of 720 corresponds approximately to 99th percentile. This indicates that 99 percent of the applicants scored at or below this grade.
The demand for MBA is increasing at a breath-taking pace. Hence, now it has become pivotal to acquire high score in GMAT as B-Schools are brimming with applicants. MBA graduates are pulling fat salaries in today’s cut-throat competitive market. This fact has boosted the importance of high GMAT scores.
Making Life Interesting
The transition into college life is a major one. There is no one to stand beside us ready to protect or correct us in every step that we take. We are free to make our own choices. The beautiful blend of exciting responsibilities and the fun activities make college life even more interesting.
Exciting Responsibilities: To pay off your college fee, you might be expected to take up a part-time job. This might consume a lot of time and you would have to organise your time and balance between your academics, part-time job and fun activities. Financial constraints would make you opt for shared accommodations and it is not easy to live with people whom you have not seen or lived with before. Although others might view these as a burden, for a college-goer, living on his earnings and meeting a lot of new people are something that would make him happy.
Fun Activities: Life at college is loaded with tonnes of fun activities. Due to high rentals, students prefer to live in shared apartments or dorms along with friends. Since most of them belong to the same age group, they get a chance to hang out as well as share their joys and sorrows. Being away from the watchful eyes of parents, they get to do a lot of things that they had really wanted to, such as attending late night parties or ignoring your daily chores. On the positive side, it helps students to learn to adjust and co-exist with others.
Since you start making your own pocket money, you get want you want without having to convince your parents to lend you. Also, usually you do not have serious responsibilities such as supporting a family at this stage. So you are the sole benefactor of all your hardships and you have the liberty to do whatever you want at your own free will.
You get to meet a lot of people at college, the dorm or the work place where you work part-time. You can end up meeting your best friends or the love of your life in any of these places that could make your college life even more memorable.
The Darker Side
This sudden gush of freedom can get the better of some students, at times. Lack of guidance could lead to dire consequences. In the name of fun, students might resort to drinking, smoking or even taking drugs. Peer pressure and changing fashion trends are often cited as reasons for students to resort to such means. Drugs and alcohol might lead them to get involved in offences such as gang fights or stealing. Subsequently, they can end up in prison and ruin their academics as well as their career. Drunken driving among college students has also resulted in a lot of accidental deaths.
Due to lack of awareness, they might also become victims of unprotected sex. Early pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases among college-goers is a common scene these days.
Although they might have relished the fun of being in a bad company or involving in offensive actions, these enjoyments would be short-lived. It would drain their happiness and peace of mind forever. So when they recollect these nostalgic feelings of college days, what would remain of these would be sheer repentance and sadness.
The Balancing Act
College is a bridge between your carefree school life and highly responsible professional life. While you have limited responsibilities to manage, it does not directly throw you into the hardships of real world. It helps you develop survival instincts in an enjoyable way. So choose your path wisely; learn the important lessons of life and remember to have your share of fun too. Balancing between them is crucial. Else, when you look back, you might not have anything more than regrets.

Imagine a job market so robust, you had to actually turn down offers. While most people searching for a job struggle just to get one offer, or even a call back, those with an Information Technology degree find the market to suit their needs perfectly. The benefits of having an IT degree are great, and as you are about to find, can literally change ones life.
Having an Information Technology degree is arguably one of the best certification style degrees being obtained today. There are so many companies looking for people with Information Technology degrees, it can almost be a walk in the park looking for a job. The reason for this circumstance is the great amount of companies wanting to go online, or upgrade their online presence. This is coupled with the fact that people with an Information Technology degree would be qualified to upgrade intranet networks within the company for better communication amongst employees. All of this creates a robust job market for those holding this certification.
Further, software, and the Internet are constantly changing, requiring people, and companies to make relative adjustments. This means that your job will rarely be in jeopardy because there are always new installs to do, and new websites to build. The more one learns about information technology, the more people realize that having this degree is a good idea.
The next benefit is the fact that you can do something that you love. Not many people enjoy going to work every day. In fact, over 50% of Americans have noted in a recent survey that they do not look forward to going to work. Some don’t like having a boss, while others simply don’t like their day to day duties. When one has an Information Technology degree, and consequently an IT related job, he or she is not held down by these factors. Instead, the employee is working with computers, and in many cases, acts as their own boss. This means less daily frustrations with the work environment, and more time to do what you love, and enjoy work.
Another benefit of having an Information Technology degree is the pay. Most jobs start out paying just enough to pay the rent, and buy dog food. Not enough to raise a family on. In fact, the average worker spends nearly half of their monthly income on food, and housing. With an Information Technology degree, your job status goes up, and so does the pay. Typically, besides management, IT employees receive the highest pay in the company, and that doesn’t include any freelance work they will do on their own time. This means for the first time you will have more than enough money to take care of your family, and even some to spend on a hobby, or save for your children’s college education.
The list of benefits for having these credentials could go on, and on. It is truly one of the most marketable degrees that one could earn. Coupling that with the fact that most can earn this in less than two years makes this degree choice a really smart move. Whether you are simply engaging in the technology of your dreams, or searching for a job that pays well, this is the type of degree that allow your dreams to become a reality. Having an Information Technology degree will catapult ones career to new heights, without taking 10 years to achieve. As society is changing, and technology starts to take an ever important role in the way we as a public work, this degree is bound to become more popular.
